Splainin’ Lucy – Part 3
Psalm 101:7 He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight.
We are praying this is information is encouraging you in your faith. It’s exciting to me to see that when we start evaluating what we are told by the world by using the Bible as our standard what we see in the world actually confirms what we read in the Word of God. We just have to learn to critically evaluate the messages we’re receiving.
In part 3 of this series we’ll consider the claims made for Lucy’s knee and hips. In the next we’ll deal with the claims made about her/his hands and feet and then we’ll wrap it up by pulling all of the pieces together and seeing what the observational evidence actually supports.
Let’s continue our critical evaluation of Lucy, the most famous fossil evidence supposedly supporting the teaching that man evolved from an apelike ancestor. Remember, when it comes to human evolution just finding human fossils or ape fossils isn’t enough. To prove that you must find a common ancestor between humans and apes.
How would you know that you found a “common ancestor?” One way that this can be accomplished is to find the bones of a hominid that had characteristics of both apes and humans. If you were to find a hominid that walked like a human, but looked like an ape, you are golden. Supposedly Lucy does just that, so let’s continue our critical evaluation of the observational evidence.
Please watch this clip from the NOVA Television, “In Search of Human Origins” and listen to Dr. Donald Johanson, the discoverer of Lucy.

Two interesting statements were made here!
1. “her knee looked human”.
2. “the shape of her hips didn’t”!
Let’s focus on the first statement. Remember, in order for Lucy to be a “common ancestor” between ape’s and humans, she would have had to walk like a human and look like a chimp.
Well, the looking like a “ape” part isn’t a problem, we all agree that was the case, with exceptions to the eye’s and skin color of course, there’s no doubt about that. We showed in “Splainin’ Lucy – Part 2” that her skull was very chimpanzee.
But, in order to walk like a human the hip and knee would have to be like a human!
Dr. Johanson said, “the knee looked human.” That settles it, right? Not so quickly, let’s start by looking at the observational evidence.

I don’t know about you, but as I look at the actual evidence, I don’t even see a complete knee to back up that statement! But, since I’m biased, don’t trust me, let’s take a look at a screenshot from a non-christian, anti-creationist website and see what they say. (By the way, everyone is biased, including those that don’t believe in God. This is why we need to make sure we’re checking our beliefs against what we actually see in the world.)
Please notice Response: 1. It states: “The claim is false. The skeleton called Lucy does not have an intact knee.” Emphasis mine!
Well, if you don’t have an “intact knee” how can you know that it looked human? That makes it a statement that is not based on observational evidence.
Let’s deal with his second statement now, “but the shape of her hip didn’t.”
Now this is very important. Remember, in order to walk like a “human”, Lucy’s hips had to be shaped like a … “human.” What in the world were Lucy’s hips shaped like if they weren’t like a “human?” What’s the observational evidence show, let’s watch Dr. Johanson again.

Uh Oh! This is a bad thing. He said her hips, “resembled a chimpanzee’s”! That’s not good if you’re supposed to be a “common ancestor”. Remember what else Dr. Johanson said? If her hips were shaped like a chimpanzee’s: “… Lucy couldn’t possibly have walked like a modern human.”
Something dramatic must have happened to change her hip structure. And the NOVA presentation has an explanation. Please watch this.

Wow! That’s science??? Seems more like “science fiction” to me! Would you please allow me to recap their explanation for you please.
“Human hip” Lucy takes a stroll down by the lake, she dies, her body lay’s there for a long time and the flesh rots off. A deer then comes along and just so happens to step on the hip bones crushing them and they then fuse back together, but this time they’re shaped like a chimpanzee.
This is the explanation they offered, not mine. Let me make a couple of points please.
1. Bones don’t fuse after you’re dead, the decay process starts after you die.
2. If an animal dies by the lake, the body will not stay there for any amount of time so that the flesh could rot off. Scavengers would tear the body apart and drag it all over the place.
The fact that you find Lucy pretty much intact, in one place and in sedimentary layers shows that after she died she was covered up rapidly in flood type conditions. If we start with the Bible, we have an explanation. Starting in Genesis 6 we read that God judged sin by sending a global flood. If in fact He did this we should expect to see exactly what we do see in the world and that is evidence of global, catastrophic destruction by water.
So, what did the observational evidence show for Lucy? What did her hips resemble? Please allow Dr. Johanson himself to answer that question.

May I please borrow a phrase from Colonel Klink, (now I’m really dating myself), “Veeeery interesting!” “The perfect fit was an illusion that made Lucy’s hip bones seem to flare out like a chimps.” Perfect fit, illusion, chimp! What are we missing?
Well, we’re missing the biggest piece of the puzzle. Remember what else he said, “But all was not lost!” What could possibly be the solution for this problem? Let me show you!

A grinder!! This is how the problem was solved, to cut out the part that didn’t fit with the paradigm? Well, it gets even better. In the next segment we’ll deal with the evidence for Lucy’s hands and feet and what the actual evidence shows.
