A Revival to Come!
It’s been all over the news—the Asbury College revival. I haven’t had the chance to attend myself (we only live a few hours away), but a few friends of mine have attended. If I’m being honest, though, sometimes I’m skeptical of these types of events, and here’s why. I remember from my own days of attending a Christian Liberal Arts College (like Asbury) that our chapel services would often include talk about revivals of the past. Sometimes it seemed like they were trying to stir one up, to “make it happen again,” and it felt forced.
However, in learning of my friends' recent experiences—this experience at Asbury—this revival seems different.
“What was most striking was there wasn't anything really striking about the room, the people, or the aesthetics. What made it so surreal was just how real it was. It was so down to earth; you were all the more convinced it was otherworldly.”
One friend wrote, “The Asbury revival is simple, humble, profound, and powerful. There is nothing unreal about it. I've never been to a "revival," and I've honestly never been the type to pray for "revival" in our country or whatever. But I pray now that every single person can experience the powerful peace, kindness, and gentle strength of God that I did Sunday night. And that we would all be changed for the better.”
Another friend wrote, “What was most striking was there wasn't anything really striking about the room, the people, or the aesthetics. What made it so surreal was just how real it was. It was so down to earth; you were all the more convinced it was otherworldly.”
Regardless of where you stand on the legitimacy of this revival (you can do your own research as we’re encouraged to do in Acts 17:11), what has been brought to light yet again, to the students who were there and so many around the world watching, is the name of Jesus! His name is being proclaimed. People are sharing their testimonies, and others are listening. The Holy Spirit is on the move. More than anything, it encourages me to stay bold in my own faith.
God’s Word is something that has lasted the test of time, and Acts 5:38-39 tells us why:
Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop them, you will only find yourselves fighting against God.
The Asbury revival will come to a close, but it also gives us a glimpse—though not a perfect one—of days to come. And so I’ll leave you with this thought: Someday, a “revival” will last forever! Are you ready for it?
Revelation 7:9-11
After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands.
And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.”
All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying:
“Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!”
