Should You Go on a Mission Trip?

Most churches offer mission trips. Mission trips are opportunities for you to leave your comfort zone and dedicate some of your time to helping others in the name of Christ. Many of these are short-term mission trips, which allows more people to be able to participate since they have responsibilities at home. Some are longer trips, such as dedicating years of service. You’ve probably heard about mission trips your church is offering, and you’re contemplating going. But how do you decide?
Reasons for Hope is a non-profit apologetic ministry with a mission to equip believers to fulfill the command found in 1 Peter 3:15 of giving hope to others. We equip, empower, and encourage believers in their faith. In addition, we offer apologetic speakers for your church, summer bible retreat, and more. Below, we’ll take a look at some great reasons to go on a mission trip. Donate to our cause today!
REASONS TO GO ON A MISSION TRIP
Give Back
As Christians, we are all called to help others, especially those in need. “To whom much is given, much will be required.” Luke 12:48 The Bible tells us that when God blesses us, He requires more from us. This means that the more you are blessed, the more you have the responsibility to bless others. Everyone, no matter your socio-economic status, in the United States is blessed compared to many other areas of the world. We are called to give back, and a mission trip is one of the best ways to fulfill that calling. When you return, you may be more willing to give to other organizations that are near and dear to your heart.
Widen Your Worldview
Many of us live our lives in a geographic bubble. We go to the same places, see the same people, and do the same activities. We shop at the same grocery stores, and we follow our routine that gets us through our days. When you go on a mission trip, you’ll see firsthand that the world is much bigger than you had thought. You’ll get to see how others live, and you’ll gain a new perspective on the world and your corner of the world that you just can’t get any other way. You’ll get to experience different cultures and different ways of living that could be quite impactful, even ways you may adopt, too.
You’ll Deepen Your Gratitude
Admittedly, it can be hard to be grateful when you are going through tough times or even good times. You feel as if you may be the only one going through these troubles, and you may even question your faith at times. Going on a mission trip no matter what point you are at in your life will give you a new level of gratitude. You’ll get to see how much you do have compared to others. You’ll appreciate your blessings, even when you’re going through rough times. This new attitude of gratitude can help you further your career, your life, and help others. It’s truly one of the best gifts from going on a mission trip.
Your Goals Will Change
Many of us have goals and ambitions in this world. As time passes, your goals change. This can be a good thing. For example, you may have found the love of your life, and you decide to get married and have children, even though that was not a life-long goal of yours. When you embark on a mission trip, your goals may change as well. Perhaps you realize you don’t want the law career you have chosen because you think it will bring you money. Maybe you’ll decide to enter a different area of ministry. Or, perhaps you’ll realize your kids need you now more than ever. You’ll see how you can be happy with less, and materialism doesn’t really matter.
You’ll Make New Friends
You’ll find that when you help others, they are extremely grateful and appreciative, and they may become life-long friends. Others on your mission trip may become good friends, as you struggle together to help others. In a world where having hundreds of online friends means sacrificing real friends, the friends you make on a mission trip could turn out to be your best. You may even return to the same place to help again and see some of these same people once again. These friendships could turn into ones you cherish, especially in today’s world.
You’ll Be Changed
When you go to places where Christ is perhaps not the center of people’s lives and where poverty reigns, you can’t help but be changed by what you experience. You may have something planted in your heart that makes you a more giving and caring individual. You may have been carrying a hurt from long ago that now seems meaningless, and perhaps now you can forgive, releasing a burden you’ve been carrying. When you move out of your comfort zone, you change. Your faith will grow as you pray, and you’ll trust God to move in ways only He can.
CHOOSE REASONS FOR HOPE TODAY
The staff at Reasons for Hope has dedicated their lives to helping others know Christ. We whole-heartedly support mission trips. Our upcoming DeIslands tour is a mission trip across Hawaii where we minister to devastated families, churches, and businesses. We hope to show others the love of Jesus as we travel around to serve. We will preach and share the Gospel as we hope and help others to do so as well.
Our apologetics speakers are available to come to your church or gathering and share the Gospel as well. We love bringing messages of hope and helping to inspire others to share the love of Christ. We boldly proclaim biblical truth, give answers to real-world questions, and help you equip others for Christ.
If you feel led to give, we’d appreciate it. Every penny we receive goes back into our apologetics ministry to presenting, proclaiming, and defending biblical world truth. Donate, or contact us today!
