What About . . . Fossils? Does the Bible explain them?
Ever been asked, “How Do You Explain the Billions of Fossils if the Bible is Correct?” Let’s answer it!
Maybe the better question would be, “If uniformitarian geology is the consensus model of evolutionism, disqualifying any paradigm of earth’s geomorphic past that cannot be witnessed as ongoing today, then how do its proponents explain the billions of fossils found buried in our planet’s rock layers?” If the only valid, forensic interpretation of the evidence is limited to current, observable geomorphic phenomenon, then where on earth can we observe fossils being made?
What happens when a plant or creature dies? It immediately begins to decompose. Have you ever seen a road kill and thought, “In a few thousand years that will be a fossil?” Are we to believe that the billions of fossils represented in the earth’s rock strata did not decompose before the extremely slow process of weathering and erosion and sedimentation covered all of them over millions of years?
All geologists agree that the rock and fossil record testifies of a former marine environment. But while they agree that at one time or the other every part of earth was under water, many hesitate to concede any discussion of hydrologic catastrophe because of the credible light it might shine on an ancient Record that introduces a paradigm of moral and spiritual relevance and accountability. Some geologists are willing to suggest catastrophe because it is the clear and reasonable conclusion necessitated by the evidence, but primarily in the context of geomorphological stasis for millions of years between events.
The Bible represents a singular, unrepeatable event earth history that gives rational context to the paleontological and geological discoveries all around the world. The massive fossil graveyards of tortuously contorted vertebrate animals, the fossil remains of soft-bodied creatures such as worms and jelly fish, fossils memorializing unmistakable action such as fish caught in the act of eating and giving birth, fossils that extend vertically through multiple layers of strata, and the incomprehensible deposits of fossil fuels, testify of a rapid, sedimentary burial of earth’s creatures and plant covering. The Flood, as described in Genesis, was absolutely cataclysmic, reshaping earth by destructive erosive forces, sedimentary redistribution, and tectonic movements.
“And God said to Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth (Genesis 6:13).”
“The world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished (2 Peter 3:6).”
“The same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened (Genesis 7:11).”
“And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered (Genesis 7:19).”
If the biblical account is correct, the evidence that we see in the world around us should be consistent with that account. Guess what, it is! We just have to look at it from the proper perspective. Remember, this isn’t an “evidence” problem, it’s a “spiritual” problem.
